Our detailed review
Who it’s for
The Triangle Mastercard is Canadian Tire Bank’s no-fee entry card in the Triangle Rewards program. It pays its rewards in CT Money, which is spent like cash at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s and other stores in the Canadian Tire family.
It suits people who already shop at those stores and fill up at Gas+ or Petro-Canada, and who want a card that adds to the CT Money they collect anyway. Anyone who rarely shops there will mostly earn the 0.5% base rate, on a reward that can only be spent in one group of stores. There’s no welcome offer listed for this card, so its value comes from steady use at partner stores and the pump rather than a sign-up bonus.
How it earns CT Money
Almost everything at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Party City, Atmosphere, Pro Hockey Life, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, L’Entrepôt du Hockey and participating Sports Experts stores earns 4% back. A $250 purchase at Sport Chek, for example, earns $10 in CT Money.
Groceries earn 1.5% on the first $12,000 of grocery spending each calendar year, then 1%. Only merchants coded as grocery stores (Mastercard merchant code 5411) qualify, and Walmart, Walmart Superstore and Costco are excluded. Every $100 of qualifying groceries earns $1.50 until the limit is reached.
Fuel at Gas+ and Petro-Canada stations earns 5¢ per litre in CT Money, counted on whole litres and rounded down, so 100 litres earns $5. Canadian Tire Bank says the per-litre rate can change and may vary by location. Fuel bought at other stations earns the base rate. Everything else earns 0.5%, or $0.50 per $100.
Spending CT Money and paying over time
CT Money redeems at $1 for $1 at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Atmosphere, Party City and other partner stores. Its value depends on shopping in that group of stores, so it works best for households that already go there for tools, car supplies, sports gear or clothing.
Cardholders also get exclusive bonus offers that stack with Triangle Bonus Days, Spend-and-Get events and weekly flyer offers, which can lift the return on a planned purchase. For bigger items, qualifying purchases of $150 or more at participating retailers can be paid in equal monthly payments with no fee and no interest, over 24 months unless otherwise stated, on approved credit. Balances, rewards, cardmember offers and e-statements are managed in one online profile, which makes it easy to check current offers before a big purchase.
Rates and fees
There’s no annual fee. Purchases are charged 21.99%, and cash advances and balance transfers, which count as cash transactions, are charged 22.99%. Quebec residents pay 21.99% on all charges. Applicants who aren’t approved at the standard rates may be issued the card at 25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash transactions. The product page says these rates took effect March 26, 2025.
A cash advance costs 3% of the transaction, to a maximum of $10, a fee that doesn’t apply to balance transfers or convenience cheques. Purchases in a foreign currency carry a 2.5% fee, or $2.50 per $100. There’s no balance transfer promotion, and the product page doesn’t list any insurance, a fee for additional cards, a minimum income or a recommended credit score.
Triangle Mastercard vs Triangle World Elite Mastercard
The Triangle World Elite Mastercard also has no annual fee and earns the same 4% at partner stores. It pays 3% on the first $12,000 of groceries a year and 1% on everything else, double this card’s rate in both categories, and includes a free Canadian Tire Roadside Assistance Gold plan plus purchase security, extended warranty and rental car coverage.
With no fee on either card, the World Elite is the stronger earner for anyone approved for it. The Triangle Mastercard is the simpler option for Canadian Tire regulars who mainly want 4% in store and CT Money at the pump, or who aren’t approved for the World Elite. Check current rates and partner stores on the Triangle site before applying.
