Our detailed review
Who Questwealth Portfolios suits
Questwealth Portfolios is the managed investing service from Questrade. It invests your money in a portfolio of ETFs and rebalances it for you, which Questrade describes as real-time rebalancing. The portfolio options listed are Conservative, Income, Balanced, Growth and Aggressive, and Questrade also publishes fees for socially responsible (SRI) portfolios. Tax-loss harvesting is offered in cash (non-registered) accounts.
It suits investors who want a hands-off portfolio and don’t mind confirming a few details directly with Questrade, because our research ran into gaps.
A note on our sources
Questrade’s main website wasn’t reachable when we checked, so the fees and features in this review come from forward.questrade.com, a Questrade-run copy of its pages. Some content there was out of date, including an expired management fee offer, and a fee calculator didn’t display properly. Treat every figure here as a starting point and check it on questrade.com before you open an account.
Fees in plain English
According to Questrade’s published schedule, the management fee is 0.25% a year on balances of $250 to $99,999 and 0.20% on balances of $100,000 or more. The ETFs inside the portfolios charge their own fund fees (MER), which Questrade puts at 0.09% to 0.12% for standard portfolios and 0.20% to 0.24% for SRI portfolios.
Questrade says there are no trading commissions, no account opening fees and no electronic fund transfer fees. When U.S. dollars need to be bought or sold to trade ETFs in your account, it adds 100 pips (0.01) to the exchange rate. Administrative fees are listed separately, and we didn’t find amounts for them on the Questwealth fee page. Questrade has also offered to rebate transfer fees when you move an account in, so check the current terms.
Accounts and minimum
We confirmed TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RESP and non-registered cash accounts on a Questwealth page. Other Questrade material mentions spousal RRSPs, family RESPs, LIRAs, locked-in RRSPs and RRIFs, but we couldn’t verify those, and we found nothing on U.S. dollar accounts.
The minimum is also unclear. One page says you need $250 to invest with Questwealth, which matches where the fee tiers start, while other Questrade material suggests you can open with $1 and your money is invested once the balance reaches $1,000. Ask Questrade which rule applies before you fund the account.
Protection and regulation
Questwealth Portfolios is a service of Questrade Wealth Management Inc. (QWM), which Questrade says is not a member of CIRO or the CIPF. Questrade, Inc. provides the administrative, trade execution, custodial and reporting services. It is a registered investment dealer and a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), and Questrade notes that CIPF benefits are limited to the activities of Questrade, Inc. CIPF protection relates to a dealer’s insolvency, not to market losses, and portfolio values can fall.
