It says COVID-19 coverage is included in its emergency medical insurance for Canadian travellers. Its product pages didn’t state a medical maximum or trip length, and its stability periods come from older blog posts, so read the policy wording before you buy.

Our detailed review

Plans TuGo offers

TuGo lists single-trip medical, multi-trip annual, trip cancellation and interruption, trip interruption, an all-inclusive package, a non-medical package, accidental death and dismemberment, top-ups, visitors to Canada and student plans. Optional add-ons include Cancel for Any Reason, Baggage, Rental Car Protection and Sports & Activities.

Policies are underwritten by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. and Industrial Alliance Pacific General Insurance Corporation. TuGo acts as a third-party administrator and licensed insurance agency.

Emergency medical and trip length

We found no emergency medical maximum on the TuGo pages we read, and the policy wording PDFs couldn’t be opened. Ask TuGo for the limit in writing before you buy.

The product pages also don’t state a single-trip maximum or the per-trip day options on the Multi Trip Annual plan. A TuGo blog post from February 2022 said travellers 59 and under could top up coverage for up to 365 days, while those 60 and over were limited to 182 or 212 days depending on their home province. Treat those figures as a guide only. Top-up policies cover days beyond another insurer’s coverage.

Pre-existing conditions and stability periods

TuGo’s stability periods come from a blog post published in April 2021, which we couldn’t check against current policy wording. It listed these periods before departure for Traveller Emergency Medical:

  • 59 and younger, trips of 35 days or less: 7 days
  • 59 and younger, trips over 35 days: 90 days
  • Ages 60 to 74: 180 days
  • 75 and older: 365 days

Age limits and the medical questionnaire

TuGo says Emergency Medical is available for all ages as a Single Trip or Multi Trip Annual plan. The All Inclusive Holiday Package is limited to Canadian residents 59 and younger.

Travellers 60 and older must complete TuGo’s medical questionnaire, which the insurer says determines your rate, not your eligibility. If your answers are later found to be incorrect, a separate medical questionnaire deductible of $15,000 USD applies. Answer every question accurately, and check your medical records if you’re unsure.

Buying, COVID-19 and claims notes

You can buy online. TuGo says the deductible applies per traveller, per incident claimed, but the selectable amounts weren’t stated on the pages we read.

COVID-19 coverage is included in Emergency Medical Insurance for Canadian Travellers, and TuGo says it’s available regardless of vaccination status for policies purchased as of October 4, 2022. TuGo also offers a Telemedicine service and 24/7 TuGo Emotional Assistance. The hours of the emergency medical assistance line weren’t stated, so note the number and hours from your policy before you leave.
