Plans Medipac offers
Medipac is a snowbird specialist that sells emergency medical coverage only, with no trip cancellation or interruption. It lists a single-trip medical plan, the 4-Season Annual Plan, the MedipacGOLD, MedipacMAX and MedipacPLUS enhancement endorsements, an Individual Underwritten Plan, top-ups and extensions, and a superannuate option for retired military, RCMP and federal public servants in the PSHCP.
Policies are underwritten by Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada, with claims and assistance handled by Medipac Assistance International. Coverage is for Canadian residents only, with no visitors to Canada or student plan.
Emergency medical and trip length
Medipac’s base policy has a maximum of $2,000,000 USD per insured, including COVID-19. MedipacGOLD raises that to up to $10,000,000 USD, including COVID-19. MedipacMAX and MedipacPLUS list $5 million, though PLUS restricts COVID-19 coverage to the base $2 million limit. The website states those $5 million limits in USD, but the endorsement text gives no currency, so confirm it.
Trip length rules:
- Single trip: trips over 183 days are available to residents of every province and territory except QC, PEI and NU
- With extensions, total trip length can’t exceed your government health plan’s limit or 212 days
- 4-Season Annual Plan: 23 or 33 days per trip outside Canada, and up to 182 days per trip within Canada
Pre-existing conditions and stability periods
Medipac uses a single 90-day stability period. It excludes any pre-existing condition that wasn’t Stable and Controlled in the 90 days before the effective date or your trip start date. It also excludes any condition that, in the 12 months before, required 3 or more ER visits, hospitalizations or day surgeries, or a single hospitalization over 48 consecutive hours. On the 4-Season Annual Plan, these clauses apply before each trip. If you need a pre-existing condition covered, ask about the Individual Underwritten Plan.
Age limits and medical questions
Medipac says it offers coverage for all ages, with no age limits. Family coverage is available if the applicant is under 56, and a spouse over 55 isn’t covered by a family policy. You can skip the medical questions only if you’re under 56 and travelling for less than 41 days. Answer every question accurately, since your answers shape the coverage you get.
Buying, deductibles and COVID-19 notes
You can buy online. Medipac offers deductibles of $0, $99, $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 USD. The deductible applies once per Single Trip policy term and per trip under the 4-Season Annual Plan, and MedipacGOLD adds a $50 deductible credit on a valid claim. Medipac can top up another travel medical policy, starting the day after it expires. A 10-day cancellation with full refund applies if you haven’t departed and have no claim in progress.
Medipac says it covers COVID-19 as a medical emergency up to the policy maximum, and its travel advisory exclusion doesn’t apply to COVID-19 advisories. COVID-19 tests required for entry or exit, or that aren’t a medical emergency, are excluded.
