Petro-Points: what points are worth and how to earn more

Petro-Points are worth a tenth of a cent each: 1,000 points take $1 off fuel or in-store purchases at Petro-Canada. On their own they add up slowly, but linking an RBC card saves 3¢ a litre at the pump and earns 20% more points, which RBC puts at about 4.2¢ a litre combined.

Petro-Points (2026): what they’re worth and how to save more at the pump

LAB REPORT

Best for drivers who fill up at Petro-Canada, especially RBC clients. Points are worth 0.1¢ each (1,000 = $1), so they add up slowly; linking an RBC card adds 3¢ a litre off at the pump and 20% more points.

Suits you if

  • You buy most of your gas at Petro-Canada
  • You have an RBC debit or credit card to link
  • You want small, steady savings at the pump

Look elsewhere if

  • You rarely fill up at Petro-Canada
  • You want points you can spend beyond fuel and store items
  • You expect a big return from the points alone

What Petro-Points is

Petro-Points is the loyalty program at Petro-Canada gas stations, run by Suncor. You collect points on fuel, convenience store purchases and car washes, then use them for money off at Petro-Canada.

No credit card earns Petro-Points directly. Instead, Petro-Canada partners with RBC: link an RBC debit or credit card to your Petro-Points account and you save at the pump and earn bonus points every time you pay with it.

What Petro-Points are worth

The value is fixed: 1,000 points = $1 off Petro-Canada fuel or convenience store items. That makes each point worth 0.1 cents. RBC uses the same rate on its Petro-Canada page.

PointsValue
1,000$1
10,000$10
25,000$25
50,000$50

Fuel Savings cards work out the same. Petro-Canada lists 10,000 points for 5¢ off a litre on up to 200 litres ($10) and 20,000 points for 10¢ off a litre on up to 200 litres ($20).

How you earn Petro-Points

Fuel, any grade or diesel10 a litre1¢ a litre
Eligible convenience store purchases10 per $11%
Car wash10 per $11%

Scan your Petro-Points card or the Petro-Canada app when you pay, or pay with a linked RBC card. RBC says Petro-Points aren’t awarded on tobacco, vaping products, gift cards, transit tickets or taxes on non-fuel purchases.

At $1.65 a litre, the price RBC uses in its own example, 10 points a litre is a return of about 0.6% on fuel.

Linking an RBC card

RBC says that when you pay with a linked RBC card at Petro-Canada, you save 3¢ a litre on any grade of gasoline or diesel at the time of the transaction, and earn 20% more Petro-Points than usual.

  1. Sign in to RBCUse RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app. You need to be enrolled in one of them.
  2. Add your Petro-Points numberEnter your Petro-Points card number, or get one during the linking process.
  3. Link your cardsLink all your eligible RBC debit and credit cards. RBC commercial credit cards are excluded.
  4. Wait two business daysRBC says it can take up to 2 business days before the savings and bonus points apply.

So for most people the reliable part is 4.2¢ a litre: the 3¢ discount plus about 1.2¢ in points. The rest depends on holding an Avion card and how you redeem. RBC says bonus points can take up to 90 days to appear.

How to redeem Petro-Points

  • Redeem in 1,000-point steps for money off fuel or convenience store items: 1,000 points = $1.
  • Or redeem for a Fuel Savings card: 10,000 points for 5¢ a litre off on up to 200 litres.
  • Since November 24, 2025, Petro-Canada says the only ways to redeem are the Petro-Canada app, a physical Petro-Points card or a linked RBC debit or credit card.
  • You can only redeem in the province of residence on your member profile.

What a year of fill-ups earns

Our example: 150 litres a month, 1,800 litres a year
Petro-Points card onlyWith a linked RBC card
Points earned18,00021,600
Value of the points$18$21.60
Savings at the pump (3¢ a litre)$0$54
Total for the year$18$75.60

The RBC link is worth far more than the points themselves. If you already bank with RBC and drive past a Petro-Canada, linking takes a few minutes.

Expiry and other rules

  • Activate your account: Petro-Canada says points earned before you activate expire 30 days after they’re issued.
  • Once activated, Petro-Canada says your points don’t expire, subject to the program terms.
  • Unregistered accounts with 30 days in a row of no earning or redeeming may be closed and their points forfeited.
  • Points aren’t awarded on tobacco, vaping products, gift cards, transit tickets or taxes on non-fuel purchases, according to RBC.

Who Petro-Points suits

It suits drivers who fill up at Petro-Canada regularly, and especially RBC clients, who get 3¢ a litre off on top of the points. The program is free, so there’s little reason not to scan your card if you’re there anyway.

It isn’t a reason to pick a gas station on its own. At 0.1 cents a point, the points are small. If you buy most of your gas elsewhere, a credit card with a strong gas rate will usually return more; compare our gas credit cards. Canadian Tire’s Triangle cards also earn 5¢ a litre in Canadian Tire Money at Petro-Canada.
