The bottom line

Allianz Global Assistance lists emergency medical coverage up to $10 million on its main plans, single trips of up to 365 days and no age limit on its emergency medical, comprehensive, multi-trip and non-medical plans. Travellers 65 or older answer a medical questionnaire. COVID-19 medical cover depends on whether a related government travel advisory was in place, so read the policy wording closely.

Our detailed review

Plans Allianz Global Assistance offers

Allianz Global Assistance lists single-trip medical, multi-trip annual, all-inclusive, trip cancellation and interruption, trip interruption, a non-medical package, a youth plan, within Canada coverage, visitors to Canada, international student and top-up plans.

Policies are underwritten by CUMIS General Insurance Company, a member of The Co-operators Group of Companies, and administered by Allianz Global Assistance, a registered business name of AZGA Service Canada Inc. and AZGA Insurance Agency Canada Ltd. The details here come from the Allianz-operated sales site.

Emergency medical and trip length

Allianz lists up to $10 million in emergency medical coverage on its Emergency Medical Plan, Comprehensive Package and both multi-trip plans. The Youth Plan is listed at $1,000,000. International Students shows $2,000,000 and Visitors to Canada shows options of $25,000, $50,000, $100,000 or $500,000, but those two were matched to plans by table order, so confirm them before you buy.

Trip length options listed by Allianz:

  • Single trip: up to 365 days
  • Emergency Medical Multi-trip Plan: 4, 8, 15 or 35 days per trip
  • Comprehensive Multi-trip Package: 15 or 35 days per trip
  • Annual travellers can call to buy a top-up when a trip runs past the day limit

Pre-existing conditions and stability periods

Allianz says stability must be 90 days for ages 64 and under, and that eligible conditions stable for 150 days are covered for ages 65 and older. These figures come from the seniors page, and the FAQ gives 90 or 150 days as examples. The policy wording PDFs couldn’t be read, so check how stable is defined and which conditions qualify.

Age limits and the medical questionnaire

There’s no age limit on the Emergency Medical, Comprehensive, multi-trip and non-medical plans. A medical questionnaire is required for travellers 65 or older, who quote online through a separate medical-screening site. The Youth Plan covers ages up to 29, Visitors to Canada up to 89 and International Students up to 49. Answer every question accurately, since an incorrect answer can affect a claim.

Buying, deductibles and COVID-19 notes

You can buy online. Allianz says the same plan is available with a deductible option of up to $500, and Visitors to Canada plans list a $500 deductible. Non-medical plans include Travel Delay of $350 per day up to a maximum of $1,500. Trip cancellation limits are listed only as the sum insured. Assistance is available 24/7 worldwide.

Plans list coverage for epidemic and pandemic diseases such as COVID-19. The FAQ says COVID-19 medical treatment is covered if no Government of Canada travel advisory related to COVID-19 was in place on the policy’s effective date. For trip cancellation and interruption, Allianz treats COVID-19 as a known event, so policies bought on or after March 11, 2020 don’t cover COVID-19 travel-advisory claims, with exceptions if you become ill.
