The bottom line

Justwealth manages ETF portfolios for a 0.50% management fee on the first $500,000 and 0.40% above that, plus fund fees that average about 0.20%. A dedicated portfolio advisor and financial planning are included, and accounts can be held in Canadian or U.S. dollars. A $5,000 minimum on most accounts and a $4.99 monthly minimum fee make it a weaker match for very small balances.

Our detailed review

Who Justwealth suits

Justwealth is an independent robo-advisor that says it is 100% privately held, with employees owning the majority of the company. It builds and manages ETF portfolios with automatic rebalancing and pairs each client with a dedicated Personal Portfolio Advisor. An Investment Policy Statement and financial planning are included in the fee.

It suits investors who want a hands-off portfolio but still want a person to talk to, and families saving in an RESP or RDSP, where there’s no minimum. It is a weaker match for TFSA or RRSP savers starting with less than $5,000, or for anyone who wants to pick their own investments.

Fees in plain English

Justwealth’s management fee covers trading, custody and annual account fees, and the ETF fund fees (MER) inside each portfolio come on top. Its pricing page shows the fee tiers as images and doesn’t say whether 0.40% applies to your whole balance once you pass $500,000 or only to the amount above it, so ask Justwealth before relying on a blended figure. Household assets, such as those of spouses, siblings, children and parents, are combined for fee purposes.

  • Management fee: 0.50% on the first $500,000 and 0.40% over $500,000
  • Minimum fee: $4.99 a month, or $2.50 a month for RESP, FHSA and RDSP accounts
  • Fund fees: an average MER of about 0.20% a year across Justwealth’s portfolios
  • Withdrawals: no fee from RESP, RRIF, TFSA, FHSA and non-registered accounts
  • RRSP and spousal RRSP de-registration: $50 plus HST in full, $25 plus HST partial
  • Transfer out: $150 for a full account transfer, $50 for a partial one

Portfolios and U.S. dollar accounts

Justwealth says it offers over 80 portfolios, including RESP Target Date portfolios, tax-efficient portfolios and ESG portfolios. Rebalancing is automatic, and tax-loss harvesting is available on non-registered accounts.

Canadian and U.S. dollar accounts are included for all clients. Justwealth says it uses Canadian ETFs in Canadian dollar accounts and U.S.-based ETFs in U.S. dollar accounts, so the portfolio itself doesn’t convert currency. It publishes no conversion rate for moving money between the two.

Accounts and transfers

Most account types can be opened in U.S. dollars as well as Canadian dollars. Justwealth reimburses transfer fees up to $150 per account when you move $25,000 or more, and we found no current public sign-up promotion on its site. Accounts offered:

  • Tax-sheltered: TFSA, FHSA, RRSP, spousal RRSP, RESP and RDSP
  • Retirement and locked-in: RRIF, spousal RRIF, LIRA and LIF
  • Taxable and other: non-registered, joint, corporate and group savings plans

Protection and regulation

Justwealth Financial Inc. is a registered portfolio manager in all ten provinces and Yukon. Your assets are held in an account in your name at its custodian, CI Investment Services Inc., a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), and Justwealth says account assets are protected by CIPF up to $1,000,000 through that custodian. CIPF coverage applies if the member firm becomes insolvent. It does not protect against market losses, and your portfolio’s value will rise and fall with the markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Justwealth charge 0.40% on my whole balance once it passes $500,000?

Justwealth doesn’t say. Its pricing page shows 0.50% on the first $500,000 and 0.40% over $500,000 as images, without explaining whether the lower rate applies to the full balance or only the portion above the threshold. Ask Justwealth directly if the difference matters to you.

Is there a minimum to open a Justwealth RESP?

No. Justwealth’s $5,000 minimum doesn’t apply to RESP, FHSA or RDSP accounts. Those accounts carry a minimum fee of $2.50 a month instead of the $4.99 that applies to other account types.

Can I combine my family’s accounts for a lower Justwealth fee?

Yes. Justwealth combines household assets for fee purposes, including those of spouses, siblings, children and parents. That can help a household reach the 0.40% tier above $500,000 sooner.

Can I hold a Justwealth RRSP in U.S. dollars?

Yes. Justwealth offers U.S. dollar versions of the RRSP, spousal RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RESP, RDSP, LIRA, RRIF, spousal RRIF, LIF and non-registered accounts. It uses U.S.-based ETFs in U.S. dollar accounts.

What does Justwealth charge to withdraw from an RRSP?

A full de-registration of an RRSP or spousal RRSP costs $50 plus HST, and a partial one $25 plus HST. Justwealth lists no withdrawal fee on RESP, RRIF, TFSA, FHSA and non-registered accounts.

Will Justwealth pay the fee to move my account from another institution?

Justwealth reimburses transfer fees up to $150 per account on transfers of $25,000 or more. Check the current conditions on its site before you start the move.

Is Justwealth a member of CIRO?

Justwealth’s site doesn’t mention CIRO membership. It describes Justwealth Financial Inc. as a registered portfolio manager, and says client assets are held at its custodian, CI Investment Services Inc., which is a CIPF member, with coverage up to $1,000,000.
