Our detailed review

Plans TD Insurance offers

TD Insurance lists Single-Trip Medical, Multi-Trip Medical (annual), Multi-Trip All-Inclusive (annual), a Trip Cancellation & Interruption plan and top-up or extension coverage. Couple and family options are available, and dependent children include those under 26 in full-time post-secondary study in Canada.

Coverage is underwritten by TD Life Insurance Company. Global Excel provides claims and 24/7 assistance, and CanAm handles sales and administration. There’s no visitors to Canada or standalone student plan, since eligibility requires Canadian residency and provincial or territorial health coverage.

Emergency medical and trip length

TD says its contract offers coverage to a maximum of $10 million CAD per insured, per trip. Single-Trip Medical also lists emergency dental up to $2,000, meals and lodging up to $1,500 and paramedical care up to $300 per profession.

Trip length options listed by TD:

  • Single-Trip Medical: up to 182 days, or the number of days your province or territory allows; up to one year if you’re granted a GHIP extension
  • Multi-Trip Medical: 4, 9, 16 or 30 consecutive days per trip from 15 days old to 79; 4, 9 or 16 days at 80 and older
  • Multi-Trip All-Inclusive: 60 consecutive days per trip up to age 59; 22 or 30 days at 60 and over

Pre-existing conditions and stability periods

TD excludes any sickness, injury or medical condition, other than a minor ailment, that wasn’t stable at any time during the stability period before each departure date. On the medical plans, the period depends on your rate category:

  • No Rate Category, Supreme and Elite: 90 days
  • Advantage and Standard: 365 days
  • Multi-Trip All-Inclusive: 90 days at 59 or under, 365 days at 60 or over

Age limits and the medical questionnaire

Travellers must be 15 days old or older, and TD states no maximum age, with the All-Inclusive page saying there’s no maximum age limit. A medical questionnaire is required for Single-Trip and Multi-Trip Medical applicants 60 and older. The rate category you’re assigned sets your stability period, so check which one applies before you travel. Answer every question accurately, since an incorrect answer can put a claim at risk.

Buying and claims notes

You can buy online. The Trip Cancellation & Interruption plan covers up to the amount purchased, to a maximum of $50,000. Multi-Trip All-Inclusive bundles trip cancellation (up to $2,500 per person or $5,000 per family per year), trip interruption (up to $5,000 per person per trip), baggage and accidental death and dismemberment. TD gives a 10-day right to examine with a full refund if you haven’t departed and no claim is made.

No deductible options were stated, and we found no COVID-19 wording. TD excludes claims where Canada issued an avoid non-essential travel or avoid all travel advisory for your destination before the effective date, but that exclusion doesn’t apply to a medical emergency or a condition unrelated to the advisory.
