How we picked
We looked at every business credit card in our data. We ranked them on annual fee, earn rates on typical business spending, the welcome offer, and the perks you would use. We did not rank on brand.
To compare points cards with cash back, we use our own point values: Aeroplan 1.5¢, Membership Rewards 1¢, Avion 1¢, Aventura 1¢ and BMO Rewards 0.67¢. A different redemption can be worth more or less. Rates, fees and offers change, and the figures shown are as of our last check, so confirm them with the issuer before you apply.
How to choose a business card
Start with where the money goes. If most of your spending is gas, phone, internet and office supplies, the BMO CashBack Business Mastercard and the BMO Ascend World Elite Business Mastercard are built for it. If spending is spread across travel, dining and bills, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Business Card earns more broadly.
Then weigh the fee against what you will use. A $599 or $799 fee only makes sense if the lounge access, credits and companion pass replace things you already pay for. If your spending is low, a no-fee card often comes out ahead.
All eleven business cards in our data charge 2.5% on foreign currency purchases, so none is a clear winner for spending abroad. Check welcome offers for spending thresholds, because some need $15,000 or more in the first few months.
Cash back or points
Cash back is easy to value and has no blackout dates. Points can be worth more, but only if you redeem them well. Aeroplan points suit Air Canada travel, Avion points are flexible across travel and transfers, and WestJet and Marriott Bonvoy points work best if you already use those brands.
If you are unsure, start with the BMO CashBack Business Mastercard. You can add a points card later and use each where it earns the most. Our card combo optimizer can help you test that.
