Our detailed review

How the Neo World earns cash back

The Neo World Mastercard asks you to pick one of three cash back plans when you sign up. The Gas & Grocery plan pays 2% on groceries, up to $1,000 a month, 2% on gas and EV charging, up to $1,000 a month, and 2% on recurring bill payments, up to $500 a month. Spending above those limits, and everything else, earns 0.5%.

The other two plans suit different habits. Shop & Dine pays 2% on food and drink and on shopping, while Everywhere pays a flat 1% on all purchases with no cap. Choosing well matters more on this card than on most, because the plan decides which spending earns the top rate.

Choosing a plan: a worked example

Take a household spending $600 a month on groceries, $200 on gas, $150 on recurring bills and $800 on everything else. On the Gas & Grocery plan, the first three categories earn 2%, or $19, and the rest earns 0.5%, or $4. That’s $23 a month, or $276 a year.

On the Everywhere plan, the same $1,750 of monthly spending earns a flat 1%, or $17.50 a month and $210 a year. For this household, Gas & Grocery comes out $66 a year ahead. If most of your spending were outside groceries, gas and bills, Everywhere would be the safer choice.

Perks and app features

Beyond the plan rates, you can earn instant cash back at more than 10,000 Neo partner merchants. The card is managed through Neo’s app, with an instant virtual card and full card controls, and you can add an additional cardholder for free.

Credit limits go up to $20,000. Neo also offers a secured credit option for people who are building or rebuilding their credit.

Fees, interest and the fine print

There’s no annual fee. Purchases in a foreign currency carry a 2.5% foreign transaction fee, so $1,000 spent abroad or with US online stores adds about $25, which is more than the cash back you’d earn on it under any plan.

Purchases are charged 19.99% interest and cash advances 22.99%. Pay your full statement balance by the due date to avoid purchase interest, which would erase the 2% you earn many times over.

Insurance coverage

Coverage focuses on the things you buy rather than travel. There’s no travel insurance, so arrange separate coverage before a trip. Check Neo’s terms for limits and exclusions.

  • Purchase protection (theft or damage)
  • Extended warranty
  • Mastercard Zero Liability

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

The Neo World suits people who want a no-fee card for essentials and are comfortable managing everything in an app. Households with steady grocery, gas and bill spending under the monthly limits get the most from the Gas & Grocery plan.

It’s less suited to heavy spenders who regularly pass the monthly caps, or to people who want a welcome bonus or travel insurance included.

How it compares

The SimplyCash Card from American Express also has no annual fee and pays 2% on gas and groceries, but its rate on everything else is 1.25% rather than 0.5%. The trade-off is that American Express isn’t accepted at every merchant.

The Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard is another no-fee option, paying 2% in a category of your choice, with a welcome offer of up to $100 cash back. It’s worth comparing if you’d prefer to pick your own bonus categories.

Before you apply

The recommended credit score is 660 or higher, and Neo Financial makes the final decision based on your full credit profile. If you’re still building credit, ask about Neo’s secured option. Confirm the current plans, caps and rates on Neo’s website before you apply.
