Our detailed review
The Solution Series lineup
The Empire Life Insurance Company, based in Kingston, Ontario and in business since 1923, sells term life under the Solution Series name. The plans are Solution 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30, plus Solution ART, an annual renewable term. You can bundle several term lengths on one policy, which helps when your needs end at different times, such as a mortgage finishing before your children are independent.
Coverage can be single life, multi-life (two lives), joint first-to-die with a survivor conversion privilege, or joint last-to-die. Most figures below come from Empire’s Solution Series product guide, which is marked for advisor use and dated April 2025, because the consumer pages don’t list ages or amounts.
Coverage amounts and issue ages
Per the guide, Solution ART covers $25,000 to $499,999 and all other Solution Series plans cover $25,000 to $20,000,000. Applicants with an issue age of 66 or older can start at $10,000 of coverage. Ages are based on age nearest birthday, and the maximum falls as the term gets longer:
- Solution 10: 18 to 75
- Solution 15: 18 to 70
- Solution 20 and Solution ART: 18 to 65
- Solution 25: 18 to 60
- Solution 30: 18 to 55
Medical underwriting
Empire’s term plans are fully underwritten through an advisor, and Empire doesn’t publish an amount below which no exam is needed. The guide says the Elite and Preferred classes apply to amounts of $1,000,001 and above if fluid tests are provided. We found no simplified or no-medical term option. Empire’s no-medical product, Guaranteed Life Protect, is permanent insurance rather than term.
Renewal, exchange, conversion and riders
Renewal is automatic. Solution 10, 15 and 20 renew for the same term until the last renewal after age 75, 70 and 65 respectively. Solution 25 and 30 renew yearly to the anniversary nearest age 85, and Solution ART increases yearly after 3 years, also to age 85. After that, premiums stay level and coverage is paid-up at the anniversary nearest age 100, which Empire calls term coverage that never expires.
Within the first seven policy years you can exchange once per coverage for a term at least 10 years longer, without evidence of insurability. Full or partial conversion to a permanent product, with no medical evidence, is allowed until the anniversary nearest age 75. The guide also describes conversion with carry-over, where permanent coverage must be at least 40% of the new policy and the rest carries over as a term rider; it applies only to coverage issued on or after April 24, 2025. Riders include:
- Waiver of premium (issue ages 18 to 55) and payor waiver of premium
- Guaranteed insurability (issue ages 18 to 40)
- Accidental death and dismemberment (issue ages 18 to 55)
- Children’s life and children’s critical illness riders
- CI Protect, CI Protect Plus and Disability Credit Protect
How to apply
Empire Life doesn’t sell term coverage online. Its site asks you to find an advisor and buy the product that suits your needs through them. An advisor can also backdate the policy by up to 6 months to save age, and explain the terminal illness Living Benefit Advance, a non-contractual option that pays 50% of the death benefit, up to a maximum of $50,000, decided case by case.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Empire Life mean by term coverage that never expires?
Solution Series coverage keeps renewing after the initial term and becomes paid-up at the policy anniversary nearest age 100, as long as premiums are paid. That means the coverage can last for life instead of ending at a set age.
Can I lengthen my Empire Life term after buying it?
Yes, within limits. Within the first seven policy years you can exchange coverage for a term at least 10 years longer without evidence of insurability. Empire allows this once per coverage.
Does Empire Life offer joint last-to-die term coverage?
Yes. Solution Series coverage can be joint last-to-die or joint first-to-die, and the first-to-die version includes a survivor conversion privilege. There is also a multi-life option covering two lives on one policy.
What is the oldest age to apply for Empire Life Solution 30?
Per Empire’s advisor product guide, Solution 30 is available from age 18 to 55, based on age nearest birthday. Older applicants can look at Solution 10, which accepts applicants up to 75, or Solution 15, up to 70.
How is Empire Life Solution ART different from the other Solution plans?
Solution ART is an annual renewable term with a lower coverage range of $25,000 to $499,999. It is available from age 18 to 65 and increases yearly after 3 years, up to age 85.
Is there a no-medical version of Empire Life term insurance?
We didn’t find one. Empire’s term plans are fully underwritten through an advisor. Its no-medical product, Guaranteed Life Protect, is permanent coverage rather than term.
Can I get part of my Empire Life death benefit early if I’m terminally ill?
Empire describes a terminal illness Living Benefit Advance of 50% of the death benefit, up to a maximum of $50,000. It is non-contractual and decided case by case, so it isn’t guaranteed.
